The VP, Segment CIO for Humana’s Corporate Systems is responsible for strategy and execution to drive business outcomes, technology modernization across the ecosystem, and the adoption and scaling of agile ways of working. The CIO leads strategic transformation efforts through large, complex, cross-functional, highly visible, multi-year initiatives, including modernizing technology across the organization’s Human Resource, Financial, Legal, Regulatory, Risk, Compliance, Strategy areas and key enterprise platforms.

The CIO must be an exceptional communicator and amazing partner across corporate disciplines.
The opportunity at Humana is to transform the day-to-day experience for an associate population of 63,000 while managing technology delivery for a large and diverse workforce, while developing and upskilling a highlight engaged workforce. The scope includes direct responsibility for approximately 200 unique applications and platforms including Workday, Oracle ERP Cloud, Coupa, ServiceNow, Planview, Workboard, RSA, NetDocuments and SharePoint Online for our Corporate Intranet. The CIO will oversee and execute through a team of approximately 330 associates and sourced resources, with an estimated budget of $125M annually.
Key Responsibilities
Strategist
- Partner with the business to align on enterprise strategies and maximize the value of technology investments across the Human Resources, Finance, Legal, Risk, Compliance, and Strategy areas.
- Lead IT strategic and operational planning to achieve near term and 3-5-year strategies by fostering innovation, prioritizing IT initiatives, and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future IT systems.
- Act as an advocate for the organization’s IT vision through consistent communications and engagement with executives, division and department heads, and end users.
- Understand and advise on trends in Human Resources, Finance, and other corporate systems technologies to ensure strategies are contemporary and competitive.
Catalyst

Technologist
- Assess technologies and design technical architectures that drive associate experience, increase agility, manage complexity, and simplify delivery.
- Provide leadership, management, and vision to ensure the company has the proper technology platforms that can endure over time, and effectively grow the organization ensuring financial strength and operating efficiency.
- Lead standardization (data, applications, infrastructure) wherever feasible to allow greater agility and manage cost. Assess technologies that can potentially add value to the organization and manage an ideation and test and learn process that drives advancement.
- Assess and communicate risks associated with IT investments; manage risks as they arise related to IT corporate systems.
Operator
- Operate and deliver efficient IT services and solutions to support the business while managing risk and protecting core assets.
- Ensure continuous delivery of IT services through oversight of service level agreements with end users and monitoring of IT systems performance.
- Develop, track, and control the information technology annual operating and capital budgets, tightly managing expenditures in fidelity to the budget process and approved budgets.
- Identify opportunities for the appropriate and cost-effective investment of financial resources in IT systems and resources, including staffing, sourcing, purchasing, and in-house development.
Additional Responsibilities
- Provide daily leadership and management for the organization. Develop and sustain an IT organizational structure that meets the needs of Humana’s Corporate Functions, including the Chief Administration and Human Resources Office, Corporate Strategy, Legal, Risk and Compliance, Finance, Enterprise Tools, and Corporate Intranet.
- Set IT departmental goals, objectives, and procedures while directing continuous improvements in staff, equipment, and processes to keep up with technological advancements, economic shifts, and business demands. Create business case justifications and cost/benefit analyses for IT expenditures and initiatives; review project definitions outlining objectives, system requirements, and necessary analytical and programming resources.
- Coordinate with stakeholders to define system requirements for new technology implementations. Oversee measurement and effectiveness of all processes, internal and external, providing timely, accurate, and comprehensive reports on the operating status of technology.
- Report development progress, resource use, and production performance to senior management, including the Chief Admin Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Strategy Officer, and Chief Legal Officer. Ensure consistent IT service delivery by managing service level agreements with end users and monitoring IT system performance.
- Ensure IT system operations comply with applicable laws and regulations, contractual obligations, and established security protocols. Monitor data security to ensure the integrity and reliability of information and communication systems.
- Define and communicate plans, policies, and standards for acquiring, implementing, and operating Corporate Services systems. Approve, prioritize, and control projects and the project portfolio related to major information systems’ selection, acquisition, development, and installation.
- Strengthen relationships with vendors and business partners providing operational IT systems. Review requests for additional IT services, assessing impacts on current and planned resources.
- Develop associates' knowledge, skills, and abilities for their benefit and that of the company.
Required Qualifications
Use your skills to make an impact
- Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science and extensive experience in technology leadership and delivery in an agile environment.
- 10 or more years of direct experience leading large engineering teams, implementing enterprise resource planning systems like Workday and Oracle which are critical for integrating HR and Financial processes.
- 8 or more years of leadership experience for similar sized organizations, or in a significant consulting capacity leading large-scale transformation across multiple industries.
- Proficiency in cloud computing, data analytics and artificial intelligence, process and workflow automation.
- Direct experience developing comprehensive digital roadmaps, guiding organizations through digital changes, and creating solutions that transform associate experience.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines with attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively and deliver presentations to senior executives.
- Advanced experience leading special projects and producing metrics, measurements, and trend reports.
